Man To Man – We Have An Inheritance (Ephesians 1:14)

In our last post, we discussed the inheritance that is ours because we are sealed with God’s Holy Spirit which makes us joint heirs with Christ. We defined it like this, “As co-heirs with Christ, our full inheritance will be a perfect existence in the presence of our Lord for all eternity. This is an inheritance that cannot be fully fathomed by our finite minds. It is too glorious to comprehend.”

As unfathomable as our eternity with Jesus is, God does give us some pictures of it in his Word. This post will be a celebration of heaven and all that awaits us. John 14:1-4 encourages us with these words, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” In some versions of the Scripture, the word “rooms” is interpreted as mansions. The literal translation of the Greek is “blessed abode”. The idea is that Jesus is assuring that when we reach heaven, he will be ready for us. His preparation will be perfect with every detail in place.

The Apostle John also gives us a glimpse through the door into heaven, given to him by God’s Holy Spirit in Revelation 4:1-6a “After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.” This is a man using human terminology trying to describe something indescribable. The picture is of perfect beauty.

John goes on in Revelation 4, to describe what will be taking place around the throne of God. It is a place of continuous worship of our Lord. In verse 8b-11, we read this depiction, “Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

We will exist in perfect peace and joy because we will be in the presence of Jesus forever. Revelation 7:16-17, “Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

This is the promise of our inheritance.
